A spanned volume provides no additional speed benefits and increases the risk of catastrophic failure leading to data loss. The failure of any disk involved in the spanned volume will make the entire volume unavailable.
With striping, every file on a volume is evenly distributed between multiple physical disks. With striping, files can be read from or written to multiple disks simultaneously, increasing throughput. Spanning simply appends one disk to the next, so any given file is probably stored only on a single disk. The best way to add striping is to use a computer or add-on card that supports hardware RAID. Creating a spanned volume using DiskPart is a somewhat more complicated process than creating a simple volume.
Items in shell user folders make up maybe 10gb if that. Unfortunately, using the current C drive for apps is not possible. Would you recommend wiping the system and re-installing the system on the larger SSD or will it perform ok with moving the game apps at least to the larger SSD?
I have the same question 0. Report abuse. Details required :. Cancel Submit. AnalogKnight Independent Advisor. I'm glad to be able to help you. You mean, you want to merge the space of two disks?
How satisfied are you with this reply? Thanks for your feedback, it helps us improve the site. There's no real benefit to this and extreme risk. You'd need to have everything on the drives backed up in real time. This way if Windows ever becomes irreparable you can restore C from recovery media using an image or clone of C stored on the other drive or external, and your files will be current and safe in their own separate partition.
If they are left on C they would be dated from when the image was taken. You'd still want a file backup. The safest and most reliable backup method is to sort your files into their User Folders Documents, Desktop, Pictures, Downloads, etc and periodically drag or copy them to external, which is otherwise kept unplugged to prevent ransomware attack. Then have a Cloud backup to capture real time file changes, and so your files are safe from ransomware, fire and theft and easily accessible via the internet just like email.

If you still want to create a spanned volume , follow these steps:. Right-click a free-space segment that you want to include in the spanned volume and then select New Spanned Volume from the shortcut menu. The New Spanned Volume Wizard appears. Click Next.
